Essential Job Duties

The Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center (EFAVC) at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a skilled and motivated Veterinary Technician to join our dedicated large animal care team. This position plays a vital role in providing high-quality treatment, monitoring, and husbandry care for equine and farm animal patients, including triage and emergency support.

In this role, you’ll assist veterinarians with examinations, procedures, animal handling, and restraint while supporting the teaching mission of the hospital by mentoring students, interns, and house officers in proper clinical techniques. The position also supports daily operational excellence through accurate treatment documentation, supply management, and equipment maintenance. Additionally, this job requires lifting up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, hourly treatments, and emergency triage for all EFAVC patients.
  • Assist veterinarians with exams, procedures, and ongoing medical treatments.
  • Ensure proper husbandry, monitoring, and documentation of all patient care.
  • Maintain supplies, equipment, and facility cleanliness in compliance with infection control protocols.
  • Participate in on-call, weekend, and holiday rotations as scheduled.
  • Support student and house officer training through demonstration and coaching of clinical techniques.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the NC State Veterinary Hospital.

Minimum Experience/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in the state of North Carolina, or eligibility for registration.
  • Hands-on experience in equine and/or large animal clinical care, preferably in a referral or teaching hospital.
  • Proven ability to perform emergency triage, treatment, and patient monitoring with sound clinical judgment.
  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills to support a collaborative learning environment.
  • Proficiency in medical recordkeeping, inventory management, and use of hospital information systems.

Required License or Certification

  • NC Driver’s License is required and will need to be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
